The Odyssey All Icelandic Locations in Nolan’s Films
Where Did Christopher Nolan Film “The Odyssey” in Iceland? Locations, Interesting Facts
For years, Iceland has played the role of an “otherworldly” place in cinema—raw, monumental, and surprisingly diverse at the same time. Black sand beaches, glaciers, endless sands, and volcanic wastelands can pretend to be a mythical world in one scene, and a planet from another solar system in the next. So it’s no surprise that Christopher Nolan has once again chosen this direction: while working on the film “The Odyssey,” the crew appeared in Iceland, and specific locations began to circulate in the media and industry listings. In this article, I gather everything that can be reasonably confirmed about the Icelandic filming locations for “The Odyssey” (without guessing beyond sources), and as a dessert, I add interesting facts: where Nolan filmed earlier in Iceland and how these locations connect with “Interstellar” or “Batman Begins.”

Latest updates from Nolan’s The Odyssey Iceland shoot
Update (February 2026): Since this article was first published, several new details have surfaced about the Icelandic stage of production — mainly regarding the scale of the shoot and the locations where the crew was most frequently spotted.
- According to Icelandic reports, filming in Iceland lasted around 12 days, with roughly 1,000 people involved locally, including about 450 Icelandic extras.
- The Iceland shoot is most commonly linked to the second half of June 2025, when reports of equipment movements, security setups, and visible production activity began circulating.
- One location that generated the most buzz was Landeyjahöfn. Near the harbor, large-scale set construction was reportedly underway — including what was described as a full-scale boat/ship structure prepared for filming.

- If we look at the most frequently mentioned locations, four names keep appearing: Landeyjahöfn, Hjörleifshöfði, Markarfljót, and Snæfellsnes — essentially a mix of Iceland’s south coast and western landscapes, with a strong emphasis on black sand and wide, open terrain.
- This marks Nolan’s third return to Iceland, following Batman Begins and Interstellar.
- Production documents and local coverage also referenced financial aspects of the Icelandic segment, with estimated costs of around 2.5 billion ISK, and approximately 900 million ISK reimbursed through Iceland’s film incentive system.
- There have also been circulating reports about filming on black sand beaches near Vík (with Reynisfjara occasionally mentioned). For now, these remain external reports, without the same level of confirmation as the four locations most consistently cited.

Confirmed Locations for Nolan’s “The Odyssey” in Iceland
There is little from official announcements, but several places consistently appear in Icelandic and industry reports, as well as production descriptions:

Landeyjahöfn (southern coast)
A port known as the gateway to the Westman Islands. Local sources spoke of a large boat/ship being prepared in the port area for filming purposes.

Markarfljót River (southern Iceland)
A glacial river with wide floodplains – great for scenes requiring a “wild,” non-obvious space. Also mentioned as a filming location.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula (west Iceland)
“Iceland in a nutshell”: cliffs, beaches, lava fields, and views of Snæfellsjökull. Indicated as another filming point for the crew.

Current Interesting Facts from Nolan’s Odyssey Set
- According to Icelandic reports, filming was supposed to last about 12 days, and about 1000 people could have been involved in the local production, including about 450 extras from Iceland.
- Nolan is returning here “seriously” for the third time – after “Batman Begins” and “Interstellar”.
- There was also talk of a huge “Viking” ship being prepared for filming in the Landeyjahöfn area (local conversations + observations of set elements).
- The film “Odyseusz” by Christopher Nolan, filmed in Iceland, cost about 2.5 billion Icelandic króna. The creators are to receive a refund from the state budget of nearly 900 million króna, which would be the second-highest payout in the history of the Icelandic system – after 4 billion króna awarded to the “True Detective” series.

Other Nolan Films Filmed in Iceland – Where Exactly?
“Interstellar” (2014) – Icy Space and a Water Planet

The most frequently mentioned Icelandic locations for “Interstellar” are:
- In film guides, Máfabót also often appears as a place associated with the “water planet” scenes.
- Svínafellsjökull (Vatnajökull, Skaftafell area) – a glacier used for the “ice planet” scenes.
- Orrustuhóll / Eldhraun (lava fields in the south) – one of the main exteriors for “water”/surreal landscape scenes.
- Icelandic media also described the start of filming in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur area (logistics, full hotels, crew base).

Batman Begins (2005) – “Tibet,” Which Was Iceland
In the case of“Batman Begins” especially returns: I wrote more about this in the article Ring Road Iceland – Southern Coast
- the area of Vatnajökull and its glacial tongues (including Svínafellsjökull) – guide reports mention the construction of set elements on the glacier and filming for “mountain” and training sequences.
Mini-guide: How to “Tour” the Locations Without Entering the Set
- Landeyjahöfn – the easiest logistically (roads, parking). Treat this as a normal travel point on the southern coast.
- Hjörleifshöfði / Mýrdalssandur – a raw, often windy area; stick to designated roads/trails.
- Markarfljót – glacial rivers can be unpredictable; view from safe viewpoints.
- Snæfellsnes – perfect for a 1–2 day road trip (many spots close to each other).
A practical note: go onto glaciers (e.g., the Svínafellsjökull area) only according to current regulations and – if required – with a licensed guide. Conditions change quickly.
