Quick answer

On 9 October 2026 at about 10:00 local time (08:00 UTC), a tornado swept through the municipality of Marsala and surrounding area (including along the SS115 road) and the municipality of Petrosino in Sicily. Buildings and homes were damaged, trees and power poles were brought down, cars were overturned, and road and rail traffic was disrupted. This data comes solely from the DRPC Sicilia statement as of 12:19 on 9 October. Figures may change as further assessments are completed.

What was the scale of the event? What’s still unknown

At the time of publication there is no officially confirmed EF (Enhanced Fujita) or IF (International Fujita) rating for this event, nor a confirmed exact track or duration. Such analyses — carried out by, for example, ESWD (European Severe Weather Database) meteorologists or Italian weather services — require field assessment of damage patterns and are published with a delay. We do not draw our own vortex path or state a scale until confirmed by the relevant institutions.

The DRPC Sicilia statement does not list Mazara del Vallo as an affected area — so we do not report it as having been hit.

Why does Sicily experience tornadoes?

Western Sicily’s coasts, particularly in autumn, are prone to intense storms and localised convective phenomena, including tornadoes (“trombe d’aria”), forming at the boundary between warm, moist air over the Mediterranean and cooler air masses arriving from the west. Such events can be short-lived but locally very intense, which explains why the damage is concentrated in a narrow band along the SS115.

Information for residents and travellers

If you are near Marsala or Petrosino:

  1. Avoid damaged sections of the SS115 until authorities confirm the road is safe.
  2. Follow DRPC Sicilia statements and local municipal authorities for the status of roads and infrastructure.
  3. Rail connections — check status directly with the operator (Trenitalia/RFI), as crossings may have been closed.
  4. Your embassy and government travel registration service if you are in the region.

What to do when a tornado approaches

Mediterranean tornadoes are usually short-lived but violent. US National Weather Service (NWS) guidance applies in Italy too:

  1. At home: go to a basement or an interior, windowless room on the lowest floor.
  2. At school or work: calmly move to the designated shelter, away from windows; avoid large open rooms such as cafeterias and gyms.
  3. Outdoors: get into a sturdy building immediately — sheds, tents and light structures offer no protection.
  4. In a car: drive to the nearest shelter; if you cannot, crouch low and cover your head, or move to a low-lying area such as a ditch.

Warnings for Sicily are issued by the regional civil protection (DRPC Sicilia) and Italy’s Protezione Civile.
