Iceland from Gdańsk for a weekend: 2–3 day city break

Iceland z Gdańska na weekend — Reykjavik, Keflavík i Reykjanes w planie city break na 2–3 dni
Iceland from Gdańsk for a weekend: a plan for Reykjavík, Reykjanes, Blue Lagoon, waterfalls and a short trip without overloading the route.

In short: Iceland from Gdańsk for a weekend makes the most sense as a short 3-day city break, not as an attempt to drive around the whole island. The safest plan is Reykjavík, Keflavík, Reykjanes, Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon, one strong nature section and a buffer for weather.

This guide shows how to plan Iceland after the launch of the direct Gdańsk — Keflavík route: where to stay, how to handle the transfer, what to see in 2 days, what to add with 3 days and when a short trip makes more sense than a classic road trip.

Najlepszy plan w 30 sekund

The simplest Iceland from Gdańsk plan: fly to Keflavík, stay in Reykjavík or on Reykjanes, spend the first day in central Reykjavík and thermal pools, choose Reykjanes or the Golden Circle on the second day, and leave the third day for a calm return, weather buffer and shorter stops.

  • 2 days: Reykjavík, the waterfront, Hallgrímskirkja, Perlan or museums, Sky Lagoon or Blue Lagoon and a short Reykjanes section.
  • 3 days: add the Golden Circle, a longer Reykjanes drive, South Coast waterfalls or a calmer plan with pools and northern lights in season.
  • Without a car: possible in Reykjavík and with transfers, but a short nature-based plan is much easier with a car or a ready-made day tour.
  • Best base: Reykjavík, the central area, Keflavík for a late arrival or accommodation on Reykjanes if you plan to pick up a car directly at the airport.
  • Do not make this mistake: do not try to do Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, Jökulsárlón, Snæfellsnes and the whole South Coast in 2–3 days.

Iceland from Gdańsk — quick answer

Iceland from Gdańsk for a weekend is a good idea if you treat the trip as a short first contact with the country: Reykjavík, the Reykjanes Peninsula, hot springs, raw coastline, lava fields and possibly one strong place outside the city. With 2 days, choose a compact plan. With 3 days, you can add the Golden Circle or a longer nature section.

If this is your first Iceland trip, treat this article as the city break version. Fuller planning is available in the Iceland section: guides, routes and travel planning.

If you want to compare Iceland with other European short-trip destinations, also see the Europe section on OndaTravel.pl.

If after this city break you want to compare Iceland with other northern destinations, also see the North section, where I collect Iceland, Norway, the northern lights, fjords and Lofoten.

City breaks from Gdańsk: destinations for 2–3 days

Iceland is a more demanding destination than Tallinn, Vilnius or Copenhagen, but thanks to the flight to Keflavík it can work as a strong city break from Gdańsk for a long weekend. The key is to limit the plan to Reykjavík, Reykjanes and one bigger trip outside the city.

If you are comparing Iceland with lighter city breaks, also check the separate guides for the destinations mentioned in this section: Tallinn from Gdańsk for a weekend, Vilnius from Gdańsk for a weekend and Copenhagen from Gdańsk for a weekend. I collect the whole short-trip tree in the City breaks from Gdańsk section.

What will you find in this guide?

Who is Iceland from Gdańsk for?

Iceland from Gdańsk is for people who want to see something completely different from classic European city breaks: the ocean, lava, hot springs, wind, geothermal landscapes and scenery that begins right outside the car window after leaving the airport.

  • For people who have 2–3 days and want a strong, specific trip.
  • For those who are not afraid of weather and a flexible plan.
  • For photographers, nature lovers, northern lights fans, geology fans and people who like unusual routes.
  • For people who want to start with Reykjavík and Reykjanes, not with a road trip around the whole island.

Flights Gdańsk — Keflavík: what is worth knowing?

After arriving in Keflavík, the easiest way to start is with the capital: see the separate guide Reykjavík: the capital of Iceland and attractions in Reykjavík. On a short city break, it combines well with a route through Reykjanes and, in worse weather, with the guide to hot springs and geothermal pools near Reykjavík.

The most important change for travellers from Pomerania is the direct Gdańsk — Keflavík connection announced from 18 September 2026. According to Gdańsk Airport, Icelandair is expected to fly three times a week: on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, and from 25 October to 15 March also on Saturdays.

The times work well for a long weekend: the departure from Gdańsk is planned for 12:50, with arrival in Keflavík at 15:50. With this layout, the first day is not a full sightseeing day, so it is most reasonable to treat Iceland as a 3-day trip with a strong plan for the middle day.

  • Check the destination airport: international flights land in Keflavík, not in central Reykjavík.
  • On a short trip, flight times matter most, not only the ticket price.
  • If arrival is in the afternoon, keep the first day light: car pickup, Reykjavík, dinner or pools.
  • In winter, leave a bigger margin for wind, snow, road closures and a shorter day.

How to get from Keflavík to Reykjavík?

Keflavík is about 45–60 minutes from Reykjavík. The simplest options are an airport bus to the BSÍ terminal, a transfer to selected hotel stops, a rental car or a night in Keflavík for a late arrival. On a city break, the transfer choice depends on whether you only want Reykjavík or also Reykjanes and nature outside the city.

  • Without a car: choose an airport transfer and accommodation in Reykjavík close to the centre or bus stops.
  • With a car: pick up the car at the airport and plan Reykjanes, the Golden Circle or the South Coast.
  • With a late arrival: consider the first night in Keflavík or a simple transfer to Reykjavík without an ambitious plan.

Iceland in 2 days: a simple sightseeing plan

Iceland in 2 days only makes sense if you accept a short, selective plan. This is not the time for a road trip. It is best to combine Reykjavík, thermal pools and Reykjanes, the region closest to the airport.

  • Day 1: arrival in Keflavík, transfer or car pickup, Reykjavík, Hallgrímskirkja, the waterfront, Harpa, dinner and a short walk through the centre.
  • Day 2: Reykjanes: lava fields, geothermal areas, coastline, the Bridge Between Continents, lighthouses, hot springs or Blue Lagoon / Sky Lagoon.
  • Return: leave a buffer for refuelling, car return, wind and the drive to the airport.

Iceland in 3 days: what to add to the plan?

With 3 days, Iceland from Gdańsk becomes much more interesting. You can leave Reykjavík for a light first day, use the second day for nature and keep the third for a calmer return or an additional short section.

  • Wariant 1: Reykjavik + Reykjanes + Golden Circle.
  • Option 2: Reykjavík + Reykjanes + the South Coast to Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss.
  • Option 3: Reykjavík + pools + calm Iceland without long drives.
  • Winter option: Reykjavík, Reykjanes, pools, a short trip outside the city and northern lights hunting only with a good forecast.

If you want to expand this plan, also see Iceland in 4 days — a day-by-day sightseeing plan.

With three days, you can already think about one stronger trip outside the city. If you want to extend this layout with the South Coast and a calmer pace, the Iceland 4-day plan is a better starting point.

Travel plan

Iceland in 4 days

A plan for people who want to go beyond a city break: Reykjavík, Reykjanes, the South Coast, waterfalls and a realistic pace for a first short trip.

Where to stay on a short Iceland trip?

On a city break, logistics matter most. Reykjavík gives the best access to restaurants, museums and transfers. Keflavík makes sense for a late arrival or a very early departure. Reykjanes works well if you want to start driving around the peninsula straight from the airport.

  • Central Reykjavík: the best choice without a car and for a first trip.
  • Hlemmur / Laugavegur area: a convenient base for food, walks and transport.
  • Keflavík: praktyczne przy locie, ale mniej atrakcyjne jako baza turystyczna.
  • Reykjanes: a good choice for drivers and a short nature-based plan.

How much does an Iceland city break cost?

Iceland is one of the more expensive destinations in Europe, so on a short trip you need to watch three things: accommodation, food and transport. A cheap ticket alone does not mean a cheap city break. The biggest difference comes from well-located accommodation and a conscious decision: car, transfer or day tour.

  • Cheapest version: transfer to Reykjavík, accommodation with a kitchen, walks, one paid pool and one tour.
  • Comfortable version: car from the airport, 2–3 nights, Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon and one day outside the city.
  • Most expensive elements: accommodation, restaurants, car rental, insurance, fuel and thermal attractions.

Iceland without a car — does it make sense?

Yes, but only if the plan is city-based or built around ready-made transfers. Reykjavík without a car is easy. Reykjanes, the Golden Circle and the South Coast without a car require day tours, transfers or giving up some places.

  • Without a car: Reykjavík, museums, the waterfront, pools, restaurants and an organised day tour.
  • With a car: more flexibility, easier Reykjanes, photo stops and better control of the plan.
  • In winter: a car only makes sense with experience and good conditions; the weather can change the route.

When to fly to Iceland from Gdańsk?

The easiest months for a first short trip are late spring, summer and early autumn. Winter is beautiful, but logistically harder: shorter days, wind, snow, possible road disruptions and the need for a flexible plan.

  • May–September: the most daylight, easier roads and the best comfort for a first trip.
  • September–October: a good compromise between scenery, prices and the beginning of the northern lights season.
  • Winter: northern lights, pools and atmosphere, but less freedom and a higher risk of plan changes.
  • Summer: long days and great photos, but higher prices and stronger demand for accommodation.

Autumn and winter are harder logistically, but they give you a chance to see the northern lights. On a short trip, check the forecast before every evening drive out of the city, because conditions change faster than a classic travel plan.

What to see in Iceland? Priorities for a short trip

For 2–3 days, choose places close to Keflavík and Reykjavík. Iceland rewards a slower pace: it is better to see less calmly than to spend the whole trip in the car.

If you want to quickly compare which places matter most on a first trip, also see the overview of top attractions in Iceland 2025. It is a good starting point for choosing the next regions after a short city break.

Reykjavík

Reykjavík is the best base for a first city break: Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, the waterfront, Sun Voyager, colourful streets, museums, cafés, pools and an evening out without a car.

It is best to treat Reykjavík as a base and a calm first stage after arrival: the city offers restaurants, museums, pools and walks, while still letting you quickly continue to Reykjanes, the Golden Circle or the south of Iceland.

Reykjanes Peninsula

Reykjanes is the most important region for a short flight to Keflavík. Here you have lava fields, geothermal areas, a raw coastline, lighthouses, the Bridge Between Continents and a landscape that shows that Iceland begins right after you leave the airport.

I describe more places in this region in the guide: Reykjanes Peninsula and Suðurnes — what to see in Iceland.

Reykjanes is not just “the area around the airport”. It is the best region for a first encounter with Icelandic geology: lava fields, steam rising from the ground, cliffs, lighthouses, the Bridge Between Continents and places where volcanic activity really affects route availability. Before the trip, check the situation around Grindavík and Fagradalsfjall, and on a longer stay add attractions connected with lava caves and the inside of a volcano.

Volcanoes of Iceland

One of the most unusual attractions near Reykjavík: a descent into the inside of a dormant volcano and a good idea for a longer, more geology-focused trip.

Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon

On a short trip, thermal pools are a great part of the plan because they do not require a full day. Blue Lagoon is closer to Keflavík, while Sky Lagoon is closer to Reykjavík. In both cases, book entry in advance.

Geothermal pools are a good buffer against Icelandic weather. In a short plan, they work after arrival, after a route through Reykjanes or as plan B when wind and rain shorten outdoor sightseeing.

Golden Circle

The Golden Circle makes sense with 3 days or with a very well-arranged second day. It is the classic route with Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, but do not force it in if your arrival and departure take too much time.

The Golden Circle is a separate day route from Reykjavík. On a city break, it only makes sense if you have a full day and are not trying to squeeze in too many South Coast stops at the same time.

South Coast

Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are tempting, but with 2 days this is already an ambitious plan. With 3 days, you can consider a short section of the South Coast if the weather and flight times allow it.

The South Coast is a great extension, but on a classic weekend it is easy to overload it. If you have 3–4 days or are planning a second trip, you can combine waterfalls, Reynisfjara, Vík, Jökulsárlón, shorter canyons, less obvious gorges and film locations along the route. Below are separate guides that work best as modules, not as one checklist to rush through.

Snæfellsnes

Snæfellsnes is beautiful, but for a classic weekend from Gdańsk it will usually be too far. It is better to leave it for a longer trip or a separate route. If you are planning more time, check Snæfellsnes in 1 day from Reykjavík.

Snæfellsnes is too far for a relaxed weekend from Gdańsk, but it is worth showing it as a destination for a longer stay. Film tourism in Iceland

Iceland also works very well with film tourism. On the blog, there are separate articles about Nolan locations, the series Halo, King and Conqueror and Gjáin Valley known from Game of Thrones. Not all of these places fit a city break, but they are great for a second stage of planning: the South Coast, Reykjanes, the area around Reykjavík and longer routes into the interior.

The simplest route for a short trip

The simplest route logic is: Keflavík → Reykjavík → Reykjanes or Golden Circle → Keflavík. Do not try to loop around the whole island. On a short trip, the most important things are distances, weather and a buffer for the airport.

  • Arrival: car pickup or transfer, then a light evening in Reykjavík.
  • Full day: Reykjanes, the Golden Circle or the South Coast.
  • Return: a short walk, pools, refuelling, car return and transfer to the airport.

Checklist: Iceland from Gdańsk step by step

  • Check flight days from Gdańsk to Keflavík and the real number of hours on site.
  • Decide whether you are travelling without a car, with a car or with a day tour.
  • Book accommodation early, because Iceland gets expensive quickly.
  • Do not plan more than one longer trip outside Reykjavík.
  • In winter, check the weather, wind and roads every day.
  • Leave a buffer for transfers, refuelling and the airport.

What to eat in Iceland?

Iceland is expensive, so it is worth combining local food with sensible grocery shopping. For a short trip, choose one good dinner, coffee, a bakery and simple breakfasts from a supermarket.

  • Fish soup or cod dishes.
  • An Icelandic hot dog as a quick snack.
  • Skyr, bread, coffee and local pastries.
  • Dinner in Reykjavík instead of random food on the road.

Best photo spots on a short Iceland trip

The best photos from a short trip are not only at famous attractions, but also along simple stretches of road: lava fields, the ocean, light, geothermal steam and low clouds are often enough.

  • Hallgrímskirkja and the view over Reykjavík.
  • Harpa and the waterfront at sunset.
  • Lava fields and the Reykjanes coast.
  • Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon, if you have permission and good conditions for photos.
  • South Coast waterfalls in the 3-day version.

Plan B: wind, rain and changing weather

In Iceland, plan B is not an extra — it is part of the plan. In wind, road closures or heavy rain, shorten the route and stay closer to Reykjavík or Keflavík.

  • Instead of a long route: Reykjavík, museums, pools and a good dinner.
  • Instead of the Golden Circle: Reykjanes and shorter stops close to the airport.
  • Instead of driving in winter: an organised tour or giving up the farther section.
  • Always leave a buffer before the return flight.

Most common mistakes on an Iceland city break

  • Planning all of Iceland in 2–3 days.
  • Confusing Keflavík with Reykjavík’s city airport.
  • No buffer for weather and roads.
  • Booking accommodation far from the plan just because it is cheaper.
  • Renting a car without checking insurance, winter conditions and limits.
  • Forcing Snæfellsnes, Jökulsárlón and the South Coast into one weekend.

Is it worth returning to Iceland?

Yes. A weekend in Iceland from Gdańsk works best as a first chapter: Reykjavík, Reykjanes and one strong landscape. A second trip can focus on the South Coast, Snæfellsnes, the Interior, the Westfjords or a slower road trip.

If after the city break you want to plan a bigger route, go to the guide Iceland in 7 days — a day-by-day sightseeing plan.

If the weekend was only your first contact with the island, the next step is a fuller plan. Seven days gives you time for a sensible route, calmer overnight stays, a less risky pace and better connections between regions without forced driving.

FAQ: Iceland from Gdańsk for a weekend

Is Iceland from Gdańsk suitable for a weekend?

Yes, but it is best to treat it as a 3-day long weekend. With 2 days, the plan should be very simple: Reykjavík, Reykjanes and one thermal element.

Do you need to rent a car for an Iceland city break?

Not always. Reykjavík can be visited without a car, and airport transfers are available. A car, however, gives much more flexibility for Reykjanes, the Golden Circle and short stops outside the city.

Where does the flight from Gdańsk to Iceland land?

International flights land at Keflavík. The airport is outside Reykjavík, so a transfer or car pickup must be included in the plan.

What to see in Iceland in 2 days?

The most reasonable plan is Reykjavík, the waterfront, Hallgrímskirkja, thermal pools and the Reykjanes Peninsula. Leave longer routes for 3 days or a longer trip.

When is the best time to fly to Iceland from Gdańsk?

For a first short trip, late spring, summer and early autumn are the easiest. Winter is attractive because of the northern lights and atmosphere, but it requires more flexibility and a weather buffer.
