Phu Quoc: what to see first, where to stay, and how to move

What is the most beautiful island in Vietnam?
During our week-long trip around Phu Quoc island, we visited practically all places except for the Vinpearl Safari Ticket Phu Quoc, Cay Dua Prison (Coconut Prison), Fish Sauce Factories, Pearl and Pepper Farms: “Phu Quoc pearl farms” , Bee Farms: “Phu Quoc bee farm” (these “attractions” didn’t really appeal to us).
Our trip took place right after the pandemic and it was the first charter from Poland directly to the island, where previously you had to fly to the mainland and then take a ferry to the island.

At that time, there were few tourists on the island, which made sightseeing pleasant. The most impressive were the abandoned huge resorts or the new Sunset Town Phu Quoc which was still under construction.

If you’re planning Phú Quốc as part of a warm trip, you can quickly zoom out to the bigger plan: Travel (main page)Warm directionsVietnam overview with my best links.

Talking to the locals, we learned that everything had collapsed due to the pandemic, where all resorts and hotels were geared towards tourists mainly from China.
Interestingly, it turned out that the island has two owners, both competing with each other by creating new attractions. One built “Grand World Phu Quoc”, and the other the aforementioned “Sunset Town Phu Quoc
As for food, Phu Quoc is a paradise for seafood and Pho – Phở soups and is very different from the food you find in Thailand.

On Phu Quoc island, similar to Thailand, we got around on scooters, just remember that traffic drives on the right.

If you’re planning the south of the island, the Hon Thom cable car day is the easiest “ready-made” attraction to add to this plan.

I recommend going on the Hon Thom cable car in Phu Quoc to the water park Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park. We went there more out of curiosity, but it literally blew our minds 🙂 The number of attractions and slides is enormous, and if you get bored, try relaxing on inflatables rocking on an artificial wave or floating down an artificial river through the entire park.
For the tough ones, I encourage you to try the trapslider type slide (the highest slide)
In summary, it was fantastic, we had fun like kids 🙂

P.S. On the island, you can also find a roller coaster (rollercoaster) located at VinWonders Phu Quoc near Gành Dầu. Great fun

Phu Quoc, the pearl of Vietnam: beaches, resorts, and island vibe

Phu Quoc, called the Pearl Island, is the largest island in Vietnam, located in the Gulf of Thailand, just a dozen or so kilometers from the border with Cambodia. It has an area of over 589 km² and about 180,000 inhabitants, and since 2018 it has had the status of a city-district. This pearl of the Gulf of Thailand is the perfect place for a dream vacation. The island is famous for its paradise beaches, turquoise sea, and pristine nature – as much as 37,000 hectares constitute the Phu Quoc National Park, which together with the surrounding waters is part of the Kien Giang biosphere reserve recognized by UNESCO. If you are looking for answers to questions like “Phu Quoc island attractions” or “what to do on Phu Quoc”, you’ve come to the right place. Phu Quoc is warm all year round, with an average temperature of 27°C, making it a top destination for beach lovers.

Brief history of Phu Quoc: pirates, plantations, and modern tourism

For centuries, Phu Quoc was a fishing and trading place, used by local communities for fishing and cultivation. In the 19th century, the French recognized its strategic location, and during the Vietnam War the Coconut Prison was established here, where political and war prisoners were held. Today it is a museum reminding us of the difficult past.

After the conflicts ended, the island gradually opened up to tourists. Just 30 years ago, it was known mainly for the production of fish sauce, pepper and fishing, and its beaches were almost empty. It was only in the 21st century that it began to develop dynamically – the first larger hotels were built, and in 2012 the international airport was opened, which changed its future.
Today, Phu Quoc is one of the most important tourist destinations in Vietnam, offering both luxury resorts and wild nature.

Phu Quoc fun facts: pepper, fish sauce, and what makes it unique

Old airport in Phu Quoc (ang. Old Airport / Duong Dong Airport) transformed into a road

The old Duong Dong Airport, which operated until 2012, was closed after the new Phu Quoc International Airport opened. The approximately 3 km long runway was transformed into a boulevard and public road/boulevard named after former Prime Minister Võ Văn Kiệt – today it serves as a wide communication artery on the island, used by cars, scooters, and bicycles. This is an unusual solution, because instead of demolishing the infrastructure, it was simply adapted for everyday use. People often ride on it for fun, and this place has even become an attraction for tourists on bicycles or motorcycles. In 2014, bloggers described how they entered this former runway through small streets and markets – it is a symbol of the island’s rapid development. Interestingly, the airport itself was supposed to be transformed into an urban zone with modern architecture, but the runway remained as a road

Ridgeback Native dog of the island — Phu Quoc

The island is home to a unique, local dog breed — the Phu Quoc Ridgeback — rarely found outside the region and valued by the locals. It is a local “symbol” of the island’s flora and fauna.
Night squid fishing — local attraction

“Night squid fishing” is not just folklore, but a real tour offered to tourists: you go out with local fishermen, catch squid, and often eat them freshly prepared on the boat or at the port. It’s a strong, local experience.
Pearl industry — with a tourist twist and warnings

Phu Quoc has a developed pearl farming industry (e.g., Ngoc Hien and other farms), which attract tourists; at the same time, travelers’ reports contain warnings about scammers and inflated prices at “sales presentations”. It’s worth visiting a farm for education, but be cautious about purchases.
“Nuoc mam” and factories — a more important branch than you think

The production of fish sauce nuoc mam is a traditional and still huge industry on the island — many small and larger plants that export the product. Visiting a manufactory is often part of tour programs.
Pepper plantations — local taste pride

Phu Quoc is also home to large pepper plantations — the aroma and quality of local pepper are highly valued, and visiting a plantation is a frequent element of tours.
Bioluminescence (glowing plankton) — when to go to see “starry waves”

At certain times of the year, on very dark nights (without moonlight and artificial light), in shallow bays around some beaches, you can see bioluminescent plankton — the effect of “glowing waves”. This is a seasonal phenomenon and depends on conditions.
Vietnam Phu Quoc by OndaTravel.pl .jpg
Starfish Beach / Rach Vem — lots of starfish and “floating” restaurants

Around Rach Vem (and some bays) you can see clusters of starfish in shallow water and restaurants built over the water — great places for photos and tasting seafood.
“Fake Europe” — Grand World and Sunset Town as insta-spots, but also controversies

New, commercial complexes (Grand World, Sunset Town) invest in a “European” look – canals, colorful facades, and shows. For some, it’s an “Instagrammable” attraction, for others – an artificial contrast to the natural island; in some reports, tourists describe them as “ghost towns” during the day (they come alive in the evening).
Rapid pace of development and grand airport plans

Phu Quoc is not standing still — airport and infrastructure expansion is planned (a large investment increasing capacity; plans for a second runway / new terminal are also emerging), which is set to change the scale of tourism in the next decade. This is a fact that affects the character of the island.
Fishing micro-communities — authentic experiences outside the resorts

Villages like Ham Ninh or An Thoi still live from fishing; local fishing life (selling fresh seafood on the shore, small processing plants) offers an authentic experience, rarely described in “mass tourism” guidebooks.

Best beaches on Phu Quoc for swimming, sunsets, and easy access

If your searches are for “best beaches Phu Quoc” or “Phu Quoc Bai Sao Beach”, the island will delight you. One day we took a walk in the sun from our resort “Sunset Beach Resort & Spa” to ” Sunset Sanato Beach Club” and a security guard stopped us. It turned out that you can walk through the beach, but you cannot take photos. Why? The entire beach in front of the resort is a veritable Instagram spot for tourists. The beach is full of structures and figures for beautiful photos at sunset.
We came back here in the evening on a scooter, you won’t believe it. Full buses of people come here for photos (beach entrance about 90,000 VND), wow
