History of Tarnim Magic Garden on Koh Samui: from one man’s dream to a spiritual oasis

Tarnim Magic Garden is not a random cluster of sculptures, but the life’s work of one man. It was created by Nim Thongsuk, a local durian farmer from Koh Samui, who began construction in 1976 at the age of 77. He worked tirelessly for 14 years until his death in 1990, creating a private sculpture park on the top of Pom Mountain. His inspiration came from his dreams and a deep belief in Buddhism, Hinduism and Thai mythology. Today the garden is managed by his family and attracts tourists from all over the world, offering not only aesthetic experiences but also a space for meditation and reflection.

This place symbolizes the harmony of nature, art and spirituality. According to legend, Nim Thongsuk dreamed of building the garden for a decade before he began realizing the vision. For Thais this is an important element of Buddhist culture, emphasizing devotion and creativity. If you are a history fan, here you will feel like in a living museum – each statue tells its own story.

What to see in the Secret Buddha Garden on Koh Samui

Secret Buddha Garden highlights: the most photogenic corners on Koh Samui

Secret Buddha Garden is a hidden paradise in the dense jungle of Koh Samui, located at about 500 meters above sea level. The garden covers several hectares and is full of surprising elements. Here are the key attractions:

  • Statues and Sculptures: Over 100 figures depicting Buddha in various poses (sitting, lying, laughing), Hindu deities, animals (like elephants or snakes), mythical creatures and characters from Thai folklore. Particularly impressive is the Laughing Buddha symbolizing joy and prosperity, or the Reclining Buddha representing the entrance to Nirvana. Many of them are covered with moss, which adds a mystical charm.
  • Waterfalls and Streams: A small stream runs through the garden with a series of mini waterfalls, creating a relaxing sound of water. It’s an ideal place for a picnic or a moment of silence.
  • Paths and Views: Narrow paths wind through lush vegetation – bamboo, coconut palms and tropical flowers. From higher points there are panoramas of Koh Samui, nearby islands and the ocean. It’s one of the best viewpoints on the island!
  • Huts and Caves: Small gazebos and caves where you can sit and meditate. Some statues are hidden in caves, adding an element of discovery.

The garden is quiet and peaceful, away from the crowds of Chaweng or Lamai beaches. Visitors’ reviews highlight its magical atmosphere – “a calm and peaceful place, perfect to escape the noise”. Spend at least an hour here to fully appreciate the details.

Opening hours, ticket price, and what to confirm before visiting

Information in tourist sources varies slightly, but most state opening from the early morning to late afternoon (e.g. 8–18 or 9–17). Entrance is sometimes charged — typically around ~80–100 THB per person (depending on source and year). Due to discrepancies it’s recommended to check current information before your trip (e.g. at the hotel reception or with the tour operator).

Who the Secret Buddha Garden is best for, and who should skip it

  • For photographers and off-the-beaten-path lovers — the place offers unusual frames and atmosphere.
  • For families with slightly older children (the route is uneven in places).
  • For people who enjoy short walks among the jungle and sculptures.
We do not recommend visiting for people with very limited mobility — some paths are rocky, wet and steep.

How to get to Tarnim Magic Garden from Koh Samui or Bangkok

Locally on Koh Samui: The garden is located in the interior of the island, northwest of Lamai Beach, in the Na Mueang district. Opposite the Wat Khunaram temple turn onto the road leading to the Ta Nim waterfall. The last section is 4 km on a bumpy track – it’s best to rent a 4×4, a scooter (only if you are experienced drivers!) or join an organized jeep tour. From central Koh Samui it’s about a 30-minute drive. Entrance costs about 80 THB (approx. 10 PLN).

From Bangkok to Koh Samui: If you start your holiday in the capital of Thailand, you have several options. The fastest is a direct flight from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) to Koh Samui (USM) — it takes just 1 hour, operated by Bangkok Airways. Tickets cost 150-300 USD, but it’s convenient. A budget alternative: bus + ferry (approx. 9 hours, price 410-1700 THB) — you take a bus to Surat Thani, and from there a ferry to the island. Another option is the train from Bangkok to Surat Thani (overnight, comfortable) + ferry. Avoid driving the whole way by car — it’s over 700 km and tiring. From Koh Samui airport to the garden it’s an additional 45 minutes by taxi or rented vehicle.

If you plan Thailand holidays from Bangkok, add Koh Samui as the next stage — flights are frequent, and the garden is a great spot for a day trip.
