Greatest eclipse near Luxor occurs at around 13:06 local time (Egypt, UTC+3 – Egypt has observed daylight saving time since 2023) – one hour ahead of Polish summer time (CEST, UTC+2). Totality near Luxor lasts about 6 minutes, making this the second-longest totality of the 21st century (after the eclipse of 22 July 2009) and the longest observable from easily accessible land until the year 2114.

Why Luxor is the best viewing spot
The area around Luxor lies closest to the point of maximum totality duration and statistically offers some of the best odds of clear skies along the whole path – around 80% according to Sky & Telescope forecasts. Combined with easy air access and well-developed tourist infrastructure (the temples of Karnak and the Valley of the Kings nearby), Luxor has become the main destination for eclipse chasers heading to this event.
Planning a trip to Egypt for the eclipse
- Book early – hotels along the path of totality (Spain, Morocco, Egypt) are filling up years in advance; by late 2025 some properties in Egypt and Morocco were already sold out.
- Have a backup location – cloud cover is the main risk; experienced eclipse chasers pick several spots within a few dozen kilometres and decide at the last moment.
- Check visa requirements – most travellers need a visa for Egypt, usually available on arrival or online (e-visa).
- Plan extra days – the eclipse is a good reason to combine the trip with the Valley of the Kings, Karnak or a Nile cruise.
Watching the eclipse safely
- Outside totality, only look at the Sun through certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) – ordinary sunglasses do not protect your eyes.

Earth is near aphelion, so the Sun's disc is small, while the Moon is near perigee, making its disc about 8% larger than the Sun's. The shadow falls almost vertically, with the Sun at 82° above the horizon, and it moves over an area near the tropic where Earth's surface rotates quickly in the same direction as the shadow.
