Gljufrabui Waterfall in Iceland

Gljufrabui Waterfall, located in the picturesque Hvítá River valley in Iceland, is one of the most unusual and hidden places on the island. Its name comes from the Icelandic word “gljúfur“, which means “gorge“. This mystical waterfall stands out with its unique feature – the surrounding gorge that makes it hidden from view and accessible through a passage in the rocks.

Gljufrabui Waterfall has an impressive height of about 40 meters, making it one of the most fascinating waterfalls in Iceland. The falling water creates dense mists that, combined with sunlight, create magical rainbows. However, to enjoy this beauty, it’s worth preparing for moisture and being cautious, as the rock walls can be slippery.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall in Iceland

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall is one of the most spectacular places in Iceland, attracting thousands of tourists annually. This majestic waterfall, about 60 meters high, is located on the Seljalandsá River, near the city of Hvolsvöllur. Its name comes from the words “Seljalands” – referring to the surrounding hills, and “foss” – which means waterfall. It is the only waterfall in Iceland where you can walk behind its water curtain, making it a unique and unforgettable experience.

According to legend, Seljalandsfoss Waterfall was created when a Viking ship sailing along the coast of Iceland got stuck in a storm. The men decided to throw one of their silver cannons overboard, which turned into a beautiful waterfall.

Rutshellir Caves – Cave of Rutur – Drangshlíð 2:

Rutshellir Hrútshellir Caves in Hrútafell in Iceland also called Rútshellir , Cave of Rútur, The Peculiar Rútshellir Cave are a fascinating place to visit. They are located near the village of Vík í Mýrdal, close to the main road on the south coast of the country. The caves are rock formations, and the outer part of one of them is covered with mosses and grass, giving the impression of similarity to a traditional Icelandic turf house.

Inside the cave there is a main tunnel and a smaller cave. The main tunnel was once used as a storage for hay and fish, and some evidence suggests that people may have inhabited it. The smaller cave, known locally as Stukan, is a mystery as to its original purpose – according to residents, it could have been a pagan temple or a blacksmith’s workshop.

The history of Rutshellir cave is full of mysteries and legends. According to one of them, the cave got its name from the alleged first inhabitant named Rutur, who was said to be an evil ruler, troll or thief.

Drangurinn, also called Turf Houses:

Drangurinn í Drangshlíð 2 also called Turf Houses, are authentic examples of traditional Icelandic architecture and constitute fascinating places to visit. One of the most popular places where you can find them is the area around the famous Skógafoss waterfall.

Rutshellir Caves - Iceland guided tours with OndaTravel.pl

The history of Drangurinn dates back to the times of the Vikings who settled in Iceland. These buildings, constructed from wood, stone and turf, were characteristic Icelandic homes. Thanks to their construction with layers of turf, they provided excellent thermal insulation in the harsh climate of the island.

When visiting the Skógafoss area, it’s worth paying attention to the picturesque location of these traditional houses. They are surrounded by beautiful nature, and the water from the waterfall creates an impressive spectacle.

Solheimajokull Glacier / Myrdalsjokull in Iceland:

Solheimajokull / Sólheimajökull  is part of the larger glacier called Myrdalsjokull, located in southern Iceland. Its name in Icelandic means “glacier of the sunny valley”, which reflects its extremely picturesque surroundings.

Solheimajokull is widely known for its impressive glacial tongues, stunning land formations and blue-gray ice, making it a popular spot for tourists and photographers.

Solheimajokull glacier has its place in local legends and myths. It is said to be home to ice giants who, according to Icelandic folklore, protect these amazing landscapes.

Solheimajokull is also known for its rapid retreat in recent years. Many scientists use it as a site to study climate change, monitoring its melting and changing conditions. In 2023, although the glacier still delights with its natural beauty, it is much smaller than it ever was before.

An interesting fact is that in 2010, the nearby Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted, covering Solheimajokull with a layer of ash. This dramatic event created an amazing contrast between the black ash and the blue ice, giving Solheimajokull a unique appearance.

Dyrhólaey Peninsula in Iceland:

Dyrholaey Peninsula, also called “The Door to the Abyss”, is a stunning cliff located at the southern tip of Iceland. Its name comes from the huge rock arch that protrudes from the cliff

The history of Dyrholaey is strongly connected with Iceland’s volcanic activity. The cliff was formed about 80 million years ago as a result of lava action that solidified on the ocean surface. As a result of erosion, the characteristic rock arch was formed.

The Dyrhólaey cliff is a place full of history and legends. One of them says that the rock arch is a frozen door to another world, guarded by ancient warriors called Berserkers.

An interesting fact is that near Dyrhólaey, in the sea, rise three rocks called Reynisdrangar. According to local legend, these are petrified trolls that were surprised by daylight while trying to pull three ships ashore.

The Dyrholaey cliff is also a well-known spot for bird watching, especially gulls and petrels. Importantly, it is one of the few places in Iceland where you can see breeding colonies of puffins.

In Dyrhólaey there is also a small, picturesque lighthouse that adds additional charm to the place.

Diamond Beach Breiðamerkursandur – Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach (Icelandic. Breiðamerkursandur, English. Diamond Beach) is one of the most unusual places in Iceland. Located on the south coast of the island, right next to the Jökulsárlón lagoon, it delights with its unique landscape.

Why Diamond?
The beach gets its name from the thousands of pieces of ice that sparkle in the sun like diamonds. These ice chunks are fragments of larger icebergs that broke off from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, flowed into the lagoon, and were then washed ashore by ocean waves.

Jökulsárlón – glacial lagoon – Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón Lagoon is a place that takes your breath away. Its unique character, constant changes and extraordinary beauty make it one of the most fascinating attractions in Iceland.

The biggest attraction of the lagoon are the huge ice blocks that break off from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and drift in the water. Their blue color and diverse shapes create an unforgettable sight.

Near the lagoon is the famous Diamond Beach, where waves wash smaller pieces of ice ashore, which sparkle like diamonds in the sunlight.

Although today it is one of the most recognizable places in Iceland, the Jökulsárlón lagoon was formed relatively recently, in the 1930s.

Caves of Hella

Caves of Hella 2 - OndaTravel.pl -
Copyrights Caves of Hella

Hella Caves are a complex of twelve artificial caves located in southern Iceland in the Ægissíða area, near the town of Hella. Their origin is shrouded in mystery; some researchers suggest they may predate Norse Viking settlement, perhaps being the work of Celts. Inside the caves are ancient crosses, wall carvings and carved seats, suggesting they may have served as places of worship or shelter.

Tunnel network: The caves consist of an extensive network of tunnels carved into the rock. This testifies to the advanced construction skills of their creators, especially considering the tools they must have possessed.

Historical significance: The Hella Caves are considered one of the oldest man-made sites in Iceland. Their discovery sheds new light on the history of settlement on the island.

Since 2019, four of these caves have been made available to visitors as part of hour-long guided tours.

Filmy i seriale jakie powstały nad Haifoss

Wodospad Háifoss Þjórsárdalur na Islandii to jedno z miejsc, gdzie powstawały zdjęcia do filmu Greenland 2 : Migration. Ten sam surowy krajobraz wielu widzów rozpoznaje także w finale serialu Stranger Things 5. Ostatnia scena pokazuje Jedenastka – Eleven ( grana przez Millie Bobby Brown ) stojącą samotnie na klifie, pomiędzy potężnymi wodospadami Háafoss i Granni w Þjórsárdalur. Fani pytają: gdzie trafiła Eleven w finale Stranger Things 5 i gdzie kręcono finał Stranger Things 5?

Monumentalne wodospady Háifoss i Granni, otoczone surowym krajobrazem islandzkiego interioru, nadały finałowym scenom serialu epicki, niemal pozaziemski charakter.

Wodospad Granni
