• Reykjanes System, which includes the volcanoes Fagradalsfjall, Brennisteinsfjall, Krysuvik and Geldingadalir.

The first of them began in March 2021 near the Fagradalsfjall volcano. The eruption lasted until September 18, 2021 and was the first in this location for about 800 years. As a result, a lava field with an area of about 4.8 km² was formed.

The second eruption took place on August 3, 2022 in the Meradalir valley, about 10 km south of Fagradalsfjall. The eruption was short and lasted about 24 hours. As a result, a small lava field with an area of about 0.1 km² was formed.

The third eruption began on July 10, 2023 Six days after a series of earthquakes began, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 5.2, the eruption started on July 10, 2023 around 4:40 PM.

The volcanic fissure is about 200 meters long and plumes of magma can be seen spurting from it, and lava flowing from three openings on the eastern and northeastern slope of the Litli-Hrútur hill (312 m above sea level). Lava streams are heading northeast.

… The extent of the magma tunnel is significant and magma is approaching the surface. The tunnel has lengthened. It is currently 15 kilometers long and is at a depth of 800 meters below the surface…

According to information from the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) dated November 17, 2023, a state of elevated eruption threat from the Fagradalsfjall volcano remains in Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland. Seismic activity in the region remains at a stable level, but numerous tremors are still being recorded, including those with a magnitude above 4.

Due to the threat of an eruption, residents of Grindavík have been evacuated from the town. They are currently staying in temporary centers in other parts of Iceland.

True Detective: Night Country is the fourth season of the cult crime series that takes us to the frozen wastelands of Alaska. The action focuses on two experienced police officers: Elizabeth Danvers (played by Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis), who must join forces to solve a series of mysterious murders in an isolated, arctic community.

To create the fictional town of Ennis in Iceland, the series creators used several real locations. The main filming location was the area around Reykjavík, but for a month the crew moved north, to Akureyri, due to heavy snowfall. The challenge was to recreate an American town in Iceland. The former American military settlement in Keflavík proved helpful, where appropriate architecture, resembling that of Nome, Alaska, was found. Additional locations were found in Dalvík. To supplement the footage, the crew additionally went to Nome, Kotzebue and Utqiagvik in Alaska, where car scenes were filmed. The old military base in Keflavik also turned out to be a treasure trove of original American furniture and equipment, which greatly facilitated the interior arrangement. Furthermore, many old American vehicles were found on site, which did not require importing from the USA.
