The autonomous province of Trento has launched a program to attract new residents to charming but depopulating mountain villages. Authorities are offering up to €100,000 in support to those who decide to buy a house and settle permanently in one of the 33 municipalities included in the initiative.

The support can reach up to €100,000. This is not cash to pocket, but significant financial assistance divided into two parts:

• up to €20,000 for property purchase,
• up to €80,000 for renovation.

It’s a chance to buy and restore an old mountain house — stone-built, with valley views, wooden shutters and an atmosphere that cannot be replicated.

What conditions must be met to receive €100,000?

Of course, to receive such a grant you must meet several conditions:

• Live permanently in the chosen municipality for at least 10 years.
  Alternatively — you can rent long-term, but only under so-called controlled rent rules, i.e. at a reasonable, fixed rate.
• Buy and renovate the property — the program concerns empty, often historic buildings that need refurbishment.
• Carry out renovations according to local regulations – Trentino cares for its architectural heritage, so renovations must preserve the region’s character.
• Submit an official application – each of the 33 municipalities runs its own calls, and applications are considered individually.

So it’s not “easy money,” but a real investment — in a house, a life and a local community.
