Meteor Shower Calendar 2026 – peak dates and conditions

In practice, the best nights are not only the “peak date” but also a dark sky. If the Moon is bright, many faint meteors disappear in the glow. Before planning a trip, compare the dates with Moon phases.

Meteor showerPeak night (2026)Activity (ZHR)Moon / conditions
Quadrantids3–4 Januaryup to ~120full Moon – poor conditions
Lyrids21–22 April~18about 27% – usually OK
Eta Aquariids5–6 May~50about 84% – difficult conditions
Delta Aquariids30–31 July~25about 98% – difficult conditions
Perseids12–13 Augustup to ~100~0% – excellent
Draconids8–9 October<10variable (a “temperamental” shower)
Orionids21–22 October~20about 80% – difficult conditions
Leonids16–17 November~15about 45% – average
Geminids13–14 Decemberup to ~150about 21% – very good
Ursids21–22 December~10about 94% – difficult conditions

When are the Lyrids in 2026?

In 2026 the Lyrids are best observed during the night of 21/22 April. International meteor calendars point to that same night, so for Poland the late evening of 21 April and the hours before dawn on 22 April are the key window.

It is one of the more pleasant spring showers: the activity is not extreme, but in 2026 the Moon conditions are fairly good, so under a dark sky the Lyrids can still produce a satisfying display.

When are the Perseids in 2026?

The Perseids peak during the night of 12/13 August 2026. This is usually the most popular shower of the summer, and in 2026 there is an extra advantage: the sky should be almost completely dark because the Moon barely interferes.

If you want to maximize your chances of seeing bright meteors, plan observations from the late evening of 12 August until the hours before dawn on 13 August. In Poland, this is one of the best shooting-star dates of the year.

When are the Geminids in 2026?

The Geminids peak during the night of 13/14 December 2026. It is one of the strongest showers of the year and is often even more impressive than the Perseids, although it demands winter patience and decent weather.

In 2026 the Moon conditions also look favorable, so if the sky is clear the night of 13/14 December may be one of the best chances of the year for an impressive meteor session.

Best shooting stars in Poland – what to target

Perseids (August)

The most family-friendly shower of the year: warm nights, often many meteors and a good chance of bright trails. In 2026 the conditions are exceptionally good thanks to a dark sky.

Geminids (December)

One of the strongest showers of the year. The minus is cold weather; the plus is very bright meteors and good activity even close to a city, although dark locations are always better.

Quadrantids (January)

They can be spectacular, but their peak is short. In 2026 the bright Moon hurts conditions, so treat them as a bonus if the weather is good.

How to observe meteors – simple and effective

  • Choose a dark location – ideally outside the city with a wide view of the sky.
  • Give your eyes time – at least 15–30 minutes away from bright screens.
  • Look broadly – meteors appear across the sky, not only in one point.
  • Best time – usually late night and the hours before dawn.
  • Check conditions – clouds, fog and air transparency all matter.

If you want the darkest possible sky, go back to Moon phases and pick nights around new moon.

Weather and cloud cover (Windy): before heading out, check cloud cover and visibility. For meteor watching even thin clouds and light pollution matter.

FAQ: meteor showers

When are the Lyrids in 2026?

In 2026 the Lyrids are best observed during the night of 21/22 April. Some calendars place the peak on 22 April, but for observers in Poland the key window is the late evening of 21 April and the hours before dawn on 22 April.

When are the Perseids in 2026?

The Perseids peak during the night of 12/13 August 2026. It is one of the best dates of the year for meteor observations because moonlight should barely interfere.

When are the Geminids in 2026?

The Geminids peak during the night of 13/14 December 2026. This is one of the strongest showers of the year and, under clear skies, it can produce a very impressive show.

Can you see shooting stars with the naked eye?

Yes. You do not need a telescope or binoculars for meteor observing. The best approach is to watch a broad area of the sky and let your eyes adapt to darkness.

Does the Moon phase matter during a meteor shower?

Yes. A bright Moon brightens the sky and drowns out fainter meteors. The best conditions are around new moon or when the Moon is low above the horizon.

How many meteors per hour can you see?

That depends on the shower, your sky quality and the weather. The ZHR value is theoretical; in real conditions you usually see fewer meteors than the headline number suggests.
