History and Formation: From Glacier to Natural Wonder

Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon Iceland
Jökulsárlón was formed as a result of the melting of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, an outlet of Europe’s largest glacier – Vatnajökull. This process began in the 1930s and continues to this day, accelerated by climate change.
- Lagoon development: Since 1934, its surface area has quadrupled, currently reaching 18 km², and its depth – 284 meters (Iceland’s deepest lake).
- Vatnajökull: This glacial giant (7,700 km², thickness up to 950 m) hides active volcanoes under the ice, such as Grímsvötn and Bárðarbunga. Their eruptions cause spectacular phenomena called jökulhlaups (glacial floods), shaping the surrounding landscape.
Vatnajökull National Park: The Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is located within its territory, being part of a protected area since 2008.

Welcome
Vatnajökull Glacier
Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland is a true colossus among glaciers, both in Europe and worldwide. As the largest glacier on the Old Continent. Located in the southeastern part of the island, it covers an area of about 7,700 km², which is nearly 10% of the country’s area. The average ice thickness is about 380 meters, and in some places reaches up to 950 meters.
The uniqueness of the Vatnajökull glacier also lies in the fact that active volcanoes, such as Grímsvötn and Bárðarbunga, are hidden beneath the ice. Their eruptions often lead to violent jökulhlaups, or glacial floods, which have a significant impact on the shaping of the valleys, mountains and lakes surrounding the glacier.
The area around Vatnajökull has been protected as part of Vatnajökull National Park, which was established to preserve this unique nature and monitor climate change.

What are Jökulhlaup – powerful glacial floods
Jökulhlaup is a natural phenomenon involving the sudden release of huge amounts of water accumulated under a glacier or in a glacial lake. The name comes from the Icelandic language, where it literally means “glacier run” or “glacial burst”. Originally, it described floods from under the Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland, which were caused by, among other things, geothermal heating or volcanic eruptions under the glacier. Currently, the term is used to describe any sudden and large outflow of water when a natural dam – often formed by ice – can no longer withstand the accumulated pressure.

Why Jökulsárlón Is Unique?
Icebergs: Nature’s Sculptures
The icebergs drifting in the lagoon range from snow-white to blue, created over centuries in the glacier. Some reach the size of houses, and their shimmering in the sun is a spectacle for photographers.

Diamond Beach: Magic of Contrasts
Drifting icebergs in shades of white and blue are the hallmark of the lagoon. Washed up on the Diamond Beach, they contrast with the black sand, creating one of the most photographed views in Iceland.

How to get to Jökulsárlón from Reykjavik
The journey from Reykjavík to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is about 380 km of scenic route along Iceland’s southern coast Ring Road, which takes five to six hours of driving by car.

On the way it’s worth stopping at several amazing attractions:
Seljalandsfoss Waterfall: One of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland, about 60 meters high. A unique feature is the possibility to walk on a path behind the falling water, allowing you to admire it from an unusual perspective.

Skógafoss Waterfall: An impressive waterfall of similar height, characterized by a wide stream of water. Under favorable sunny conditions, you can observe beautiful rainbows here.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach: Famous beach with black, volcanic sand, surrounded by basalt columns and rock formations. This place is known for the powerful Atlantic waves and extraordinary views.

Vík í Mýrdal Town: A charming town located near Reynisfjara, offering picturesque landscapes and a characteristic church on the hill.

Skaftafell National Park: Part of the larger Vatnajökull National Park, offering numerous hiking trails, including one leading to the Svartifoss waterfall, surrounded by black basalt columns.
Films made in the area of Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon / Jokulsarlon
Scenes for several international film productions were filmed at the Jökulsárlón lagoon in Iceland. The most important include:
• James Bond films – it was here that parts of hits such as “Die Another Day” and “A View to a Kill” were filmed. The lagoon, with its unique, icy landscape, provided the perfect backdrop for dynamic action scenes.
• ”Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” – production with Angelina Jolie, which used the raw, winter landscapes of Jökulsárlón to create scenery resembling distant, frosty regions (often symbolizing Siberia).
• ”Batman Begins” – part of the scenes from this film, also known under the Polish title “Batman: Początek”, were filmed in the area of the lagoon, where the extraordinary ice formations added a dark atmosphere to the film.
Additionally, Jökulsárlón was also used in the production of Justin Bieber’s music video “I’ll Show You”, confirming that this location is extremely popular among filmmakers.
It is precisely the unique mix of ice blocks, deep, cold water and changeable, dramatic lighting that makes Jökulsárlón a frequently chosen location for filming both action movies and fantasy or science fiction productions.
