Move to Italy for free – curiosities from around the world

This is a HIT! I was just writing about a Norwegian town offering free housing “Move to northern Norway — a year for free”, and now it turns out Italians are offering something similar. The autonomous province of Trento has launched a program to attract new residents to charming but depopulating mountain villages. Authorities are offering up to €100,000 in support to those who decide to buy a house and settle permanently in one of the 33 municipalities included in the initiative.
Imagine a morning in a small Italian town: the smell of fresh coffee, the church bells ringing and a view of snow-capped Alpine peaks. Sounds like a dream? In Trentino it can be reality — and a reality that Italians are even paying for!

Why is Trentino in Italy paying people to move?
Over recent years many mountain towns in northern Italy have lost inhabitants. Young people moved to the cities, and houses in valleys and on mountain slopes were left empty. The regional authorities decided to do something unusual: encourage new residents to bring life back to these forgotten towns.
The program has two goals — to renovate old houses and to revive local communities. This is not a simple bonus or a tourist gimmick. It’s a real offer for those who want to start a new life in the Italian Alps, away from the hustle and bustle of big cities.

How much can you get and for what?
The support can reach up to €100,000. This is not cash to pocket, but significant financial assistance divided into two parts:
- up to €20,000 for property purchase,
- up to €80,000 for renovation.
It’s a chance to buy and restore an old mountain house — stone-built, with valley views, wooden shutters and an atmosphere that cannot be replicated.

What conditions must be met to receive €100,000?
Of course, to receive such a grant you must meet several conditions:
- Live permanently in the chosen municipality for at least 10 years.
Alternatively — you can rent long-term, but only under so-called controlled rent rules, i.e. at a reasonable, fixed rate. - Buy and renovate the property — the program concerns empty, often historic buildings that need refurbishment.
- Carry out renovations according to local regulations – Trentino cares for its architectural heritage, so renovations must preserve the region’s character.
- Submit an official application – each of the 33 municipalities runs its own calls, and applications are considered individually.
So it’s not “easy money,” but a real investment — in a house, a life and a local community.

Where exactly can you move to?
The list includes 33 municipalities in the heart of the Alps — in valleys where life moves slower and nature is within reach. Among them are places such as:
Vermiglio, Peio, Livo, Rabbi, Sella Giudicarie and many others, scattered among forests, lakes and mountain trails.
These are true gems — narrow streets, stone houses, local festivals and neighbours who have known each other for generations.
Additional incentives for families and young people
That’s not all. Trentino also offers additional grants for families who decide to move to the mountains — even €3,000 per year for 3 years. Young residents and people with children often get priority when grants are awarded.
Thanks to this the region aims not only to stop depopulation but also to bring schools, small shops and local businesses back to life.

What to know before you pack your suitcases?
Before you sell your flat in Poland and head to the Alps, keep a few things in mind:
- Formalities in Italy can be complicated – you need to obtain a tax code, open an account in an Italian bank and register your residence.
- Renovations in the mountains can be expensive and require permits. If the house is historic, special rules apply.
- The 10-year commitment is a serious decision. Make sure this lifestyle really suits you.
On the other hand — if you dream of a peaceful life surrounded by nature, working remotely with mountain views, evenings with wine and local cheeses, this could be your moment.
