Golden Circle tourist attractions – Iceland
What to see on the Golden Circle in Iceland – tourist attractions and interesting facts:
Golden Circle in Iceland is a popular tourist route in Iceland, which leads through some of the most characteristic and charming places of this country. The “Golden Circle” is an absolute must see in Iceland during tours of Iceland. Below are its most popular points:
- Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park: This is a place of historical, cultural and geological significance. Here the North American Tectonic Plate and the Eurasian Plate meet. It is also the place where Althing, the world’s oldest operating parliament, gathered from 930 to 1798.
- Strokkur and Geysir Geysers in Haukadalur: Haukadalur is a geothermal area where you can see many hot springs and geysers, including Geysir – the geyser that gave its name to all others in the world, and Strokkur – which erupts every few minutes, shooting water up to 30 meters high.
- Gullfoss Waterfall: This is one of the most beautiful and most powerful waterfalls in Iceland. The “Golden Waterfall”, as it is called, is often covered by rainbows and offers spectacular views.
- Kerid Crater Lake: This is a lake in a volcanic crater that is often added to the Golden Circle route. The Kerid crater is unique due to its bright red earth and intensely blue water.
- Thorufoss Waterfall: is a place that gained recognition thanks to the popular series “Game of Thrones”. Its wild waters were the backdrop for one of the most memorable scenes, in which the dragon Drogon, belonging to Daenerys Targaryen, catches a fish right from the waterfall. The picturesque and wild surroundings of Thorufoss perfectly fit the climate of epic fantasy, making this place one of the most memorable on the “Game of Thrones” map in Iceland.
- Fridheimar Restaurant: is a unique restaurant and greenhouse in one, located in Iceland, famous for growing tomatoes and producing honey. Everything they serve is based on tomatoes, from soups and cocktails, to tomato cake. While sitting in the restaurant, guests can observe how tomatoes grow in the greenhouse. Þingvellir (Thingvellir)
National Park – Iceland
Þingvellir, or Thingvellir, is a national park located in the southwest of Iceland. It is a place of immense historical, cultural and geological significance.
Þingvellir is the birthplace of Icelandic democracy. In 930 AD, in the fields of this park, Althing was established – one of the oldest functioning parliaments in the world. It is the place where clan representatives met for centuries to discuss law and settle disputes.

Currently, Þingvellir is a place full of unique experiences. You can see the extraordinary tectonic rift between the Eurasian and American plates, and even dive into the clear waters of the Silfra fissure, popular among divers from all over the world.
An interesting fact is that Thingvellir is one of the three places that form the so-called “Golden Circle” – a popular tourist route in Iceland.

Game Of Thrones

SOURCE: X
Thingvellir National Park appears in many scenes of the fourth season of the series “Game of Thrones”, but it is most memorable for the journey of two heroes – Arya and her companion, towards the impregnable fortress. It is also the place where the spectacular sword fight between two main characters Brienne vs The Hound was filmed.

Öxarárfoss Waterfall – Iceland
The park contains the Öxarárfoss waterfall, which falls into a tectonic fissure, making it a unique place to visit. Þingvellir is also home to Lake Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland.

Silfra – Diving Between Continents in Iceland
Silfra is one of Iceland’s most unique attractions and the only place in the world where you can dive between two tectonic plates – the Eurasian and the North American. This narrow fissure is located in Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, about an hour’s drive from Reykjavík.
The water in Silfra comes from the melting Langjökull glacier and filters through porous lava fields for decades. This makes it almost perfectly clear – visibility reaches over 100 meters, making diving and snorkeling in Silfra considered one of the most unique experiences in the world.
Snorkeling and Diving in Silfra
- Snorkeling in Silfra – available to anyone who wants to feel the magic of swimming in crystal clear water. Participants wear special drysuits that protect them from the cold. The face and hands are in contact with water at a temperature of 2–4°C, which gives an incredible but safe experience.
- Diving in Silfra – intended for people with a diving certificate and experience in a drysuit. This is a deeper and more technical adventure, allowing you to discover all sections of the fissure: from the narrow “Big Crack”, through the majestic “Silfra Cathedral”, to the calm lagoon.

Practical Information
- Location: Þingvellir, about 50 km from Reykjavík.
- Water temperature: 2–4°C year-round.
- Equipment: provided by organizers – drysuit, mask, fins.
- Requirements: for snorkeling, good physical condition is sufficient; for diving, a certificate and experience in drysuit diving are required.
- Duration: about 30–40 minutes in the water plus preparation and training.
I received the diving photos from a group that was diving in Silfra in Thingvellir National Park during a tour of Iceland

Geysers Strokkur and Geysir in Haukadalur:
Geyser Iceland

Haukadalur Valley on the south coast of Iceland is a true treasure for lovers of geothermal activity. It is the place where two of Iceland’s most famous geysers are located: Geysir and Strokkur.
Geysir, from which our commonly used word “geyser” originates, is one of the oldest known geysers in the world. Its name comes from the Old Icelandic word “geysa”, which means “to gush”.
Strokkur, on the other hand, is the most active geyser in the valley, regularly erupting every 6-10 minutes, creating a column of hot water and steam reaching up to 20 meters.
Haukadalur, besides geysers, also has many other interesting places to discover, including numerous hot springs, mud pools and fumaroles. These spectacular, hot and lush landscapes are like from another world and are an unforgettable experience for anyone visiting Iceland.
Interesting fact: Geysers are unique phenomena that can only be seen in a few places in the world. Besides Iceland, they also occur in countries such as the United States (in Yellowstone National Park is the largest concentration of geysers in the world), Russia (on the Kamchatka Peninsula), New Zealand and Chile. It is Iceland, due to its unique volcanic activity, that is one of the most accessible regions where you can admire these incredible tourist attractions.
Visiting Iceland, and especially exploring the Golden Circle, is a mandatory point of every trip. Iceland tourist attractions

Gullfoss Waterfall – Iceland:

Gullfoss Waterfall, also known as the “Golden Waterfall”, is one of the most impressive and popular waterfalls in Iceland. It is a key point of Iceland’s famous “Golden Route” tourist trail.
The name Gullfoss comes from the optical effect that causes the water on a sunny day to look like flowing gold. The waterfall consists of two cascades: an upper and a lower one, creating an unforgettable sight together.
Legend has it that at the beginning of the 20th century, there were plans to build a hydroelectric dam that threatened the existence of Gullfoss. A local woman, Sigridur Tomasdottir, threatened to throw herself into the waterfall if the plans were carried out. Fortunately, the plans were abandoned, and Gullfoss remained untouched.
Gullfoss is also unique in terms of its ecosystem, with numerous bird species inhabiting the area around the waterfall, making it an attractive place for nature watchers.

Kerid Crater Lake – Iceland:
Kerid (Kerið) Klausturholar is an impressive crater lake located in the Grímsnes region in southern Iceland. Belonging to the Western Volcanic Zone, which includes the Reykjanes Peninsula and the Langjökull glacier.
Its walls of red volcanic rock, covered with moss, contrast with the intensely blue water in the crater, and this effect is particularly visible in the sun. The crater is about 55 meters deep, 170 meters wide and 270 meters long.
Kerid is one of several volcanic craters in the region, but it is the most colorful and impressive. Its age is estimated at about 6,500 years, making it a relatively young (geologically) feature in Iceland.
An interesting fact is that the acoustic properties of the Kerid Crater mean that concerts are regularly held there. The unique setting and natural acoustics make these events an unforgettable experience.

Thorufoss Waterfall – Þórufoss :
Thorufoss Þórufoss is a picturesque waterfall in Iceland that is not as well-known as others, but definitely deserves attention. It is located about 18 km northwest of Reykjavik.
With a cascade height of 18 meters, Thorufoss creates an impressive spectacle as water falls from the cliff in a powerful stream. The surroundings of the waterfall are equally attractive, with green meadows and wild nature.
Thorufoss gained popularity thanks to the series “Game of Thrones”, where it appears in one of the episodes of the fourth season as a meeting place with one of the dragons.
According to local legends, a large and dangerous troll once lived in the waters of Thorufoss, who disappeared when villages began to adopt Christianity.

Fridheimar Friðheimar Restaurant – Iceland:
Fridheimar Restaurant / Friðheimar Reykholt located in the heart of Iceland, is a true gem for gourmets and lovers of sustainable cuisine. This family restaurant, founded by Knut and Helga, has revolutionized Icelandic culinary culture through its incredible approach to growing tomatoes.

Fridheimar is not only a restaurant, but also a greenhouse where tomatoes are grown all year round, regardless of the difficult weather conditions in Iceland. The greenhouse uses geothermal heat sources naturally occurring in Iceland, making tomato cultivation possible even in harsh winter conditions.
The restaurant is known for its tomato-based menu, from classic tomato soup, through tomato cocktails, to an unusual tomato cake. Everything is served directly in the greenhouse among the growing plants, creating a unique atmosphere.

An interesting fact is that Fridheimar is also a beekeeping farm, and guests can taste honey produced on site. The restaurant also organizes Icelandic horse riding shows.
Bees in the greenhouse: Bees live in the Fridheimar greenhouse, which are crucial for the process of pollinating tomato plants. The bees were brought from the Netherlands and are an integral part of the greenhouse ecosystem.
Soup idea: The restaurant is known for its delicious tomato soup, served directly in the greenhouse. Interestingly, the idea for this soup came about spontaneously when Knut and Helga, the founders of the restaurant, decided to share their surplus tomatoes with the local community.
Icelandic horses: Fridheimar is not just a restaurant and greenhouse. It is also home to Icelandic horses, which are an important part of Icelandic culture. Guests can see equestrian shows and learn more about the history and characteristics of these unique animals.
Music for plants: Believing that music has a positive effect on plant growth, the owners of Fridheimar regularly play classical music in their greenhouse.
These are just a few of the many attractions offered by the Golden Circle region in Iceland

Arnarker Lava Cave
An additional place I take travelers to during tours around Iceland is the Arnarker lava cave. Such locations are appearing more and more as a result of earthquakes and volcanic activity. Many regions, including Reykjanes, hide a true web of magma tunnels beneath the surface.
One such place is the Arnarker lava tunnel, located very close to the town of Selfoss, making it an interesting addition when touring the Golden Circle.
Arnarker is currently accessible for free, while nearby there is also a paid alternative – Lava Tunnel – Raufarhólshellir, which is much larger and more extensive.
If you have more time or ,when traveling around the Reykjanes Peninsula you may come across another lava cave Leiðarendi , but I advise against entering it on your own.
I write more about the Arnarker tunnel in a separate post and show its interior in a film, also talking about other available options for visiting lava caves in Iceland.
