ICELAND NEWS – Eruption explosion in Litli-Hrútur on the Reykjanes peninsula

Six days after the series of earthquakes began, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 5.2, on July 10, 2023, around 16:40, the eruption began.

The volcanic fissure is about 200 meters long, and plumes of magma spurting from it and lava flowing from three vents on the eastern and northeastern slope of the Litli-Hrútur hill (312 m above sea level) are visible. Lava streams are heading northeast.

According to IMO, the fissure from which lava is flowing is about 200 meters long.

According to IMO, the fissure from which lava is flowing is about 200 meters long. Geophysicist Benedikt Ófeigsson, who is near the eruption site, emphasizes the existence of three eruptive fissures, the longest of which stretches for about 200-300 meters from northwest to southeast. His words were quoted on the portal ruv.is.
Matthew Roberts from IMO stated that we are currently dealing with a very small eruption and there is no direct threat to the population living in this region.

Over 12 thousand tremors recorded since July 4

The eruption was preceded by increased seismic activity in the region. Since July 4, over 12 thousand tremors have been recorded, with the largest one having a magnitude of 5.2, which occurred last night.
Measurements using GPS and InSAR (Satellite Radar Interferometry) systems indicated the possibility of lava outflow from the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system. These measurements revealed ground deformation, confirming the movement of magma towards the Earth’s surface.

IMO raised the alert level for the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system from the second to the third. No decision has been made yet to raise it to the highest, fourth level.

The eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system is the first such event in centuries

The eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system is the first such event in centuries. The previous one took place in the 12th century (around 1340, according to some sources) and since then, no eruptions of this system have been recorded. However, on March 19, 2021, an eruption occurred, which lasted until September 18, 2021. Lava spread in the Geldingadalir valley, causing no damage. Due to its relatively calm course, it became a tourist attraction.
Another eruption took place on August 3, 2022, but it lasted much shorter – only 17 days.

What we know about the Fagradalsfjall volcano

Fagradalsfjall is an active volcano located in Iceland. It is a relatively young volcano that erupted in March 2021, attracting significant media and tourist interest. Here are some facts about the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system:

  1. Location: Fagradalsfjall is located on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland, about 30 kilometers south of the country’s capital, Reykjavik.
  2. Eruption: The eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano began on March 19, 2021. It was the first eruption in this region in over 800 years. The lava ejection was relatively small on a volcanic scale, but it was of great scientific and tourist significance.

Fagradalsfjall is part of a larger volcanic system called Krýsuvík-Trölladyngja

Fagradalsfjall is part of a larger volcanic system called Krýsuvík-Trölladyngja, located in Iceland. Here is some information about this volcanic system:

  1. Location: The Krýsuvík-Trölladyngja volcanic system lies on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland, near the country’s capital, Reykjavik. It covers the area around two main volcanoes – Krýsuvík and Trölladyngja.
  2. Characteristics: The Krýsuvík-Trölladyngja volcanic system is an area of high volcanic activity. It consists of a series of volcanic cones, craters, and rifts resulting from volcanic and seismic activity in the region.
  3. Eruptions: The Krýsuvík-Trölladyngja volcanic system is active and has had various eruptions in the past. Eruptions in this region are typically characterized by basaltic lava flows, similar to what happened during the recent eruption at Fagradalsfjall in 2021.
  4. Rift zone: Krýsuvík-Trölladyngja is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rift zone, which is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart. This process causes seismic and volcanic activity in this area.

Fagradalsfjall is a shield volcano

  1. Type of volcano: Fagradalsfjall is a shield volcano, meaning it has a flat shape and wide volcanic cones. This is a common type of volcano in Iceland.
  2. Lava: The volcanic lava coming from Fagradalsfjall is basaltic, meaning it consists mainly of dark lava with low viscosity. This lava tends to flow over greater distances, forming long lava streams.
  3. Safety: Icelandic authorities monitor the volcano’s activity and provide appropriate safety measures for visitors to the eruption area. It is especially important to follow marked trails and safety recommendations.
  4. Tourism: The Fagradalsfjall eruption attracted a large number of tourists from all over the world. The eruption can be admired from a safe distance, and some tourist trails lead near the volcanic cones.
Here are some useful links to articles and publications about the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system:

In 1943, on Fagradalsfjall, an Icelandic volcano, an air disaster occurred in which 14 people died, including the American general of the United States Army Air Forces Frank Andrews.

B 24 Liberator - OndaTravel.pl -
  1. Accident: On May 3, 1943, an American B-24 Liberator bomber crashed on the slope of Fagradalsfjall during a flight from England to Iceland. The causes of the crash are not entirely known, but it is believed that bad weather conditions, including strong wind gusts, may have contributed to the accident.
  2. Crew: The aircraft’s crew consisted of 7 members, including pilots and bomber guards. General Frank Andrews, commander of the United States Army Air Forces in Europe, was also on board, traveling to Iceland on official business.
  3. Victims: All 14 people on board the aircraft died in the crash. The death of General Frank Andrews was a great shock to the United States, as he was a high-ranking military officer and played a key role in American involvement in Europe during World War II.
  4. Investigation and commemoration: After the crash on Fagradalsfjall, an investigation was conducted to determine the causes of the accident. There is now a memorial at the site of the tragedy, which serves as a place of remembrance for those who died in this tragic event.
